“MATRIOSHKA” DIGITAL RHETORICS- 02.02.2023

This piece was painted for my Digital Rhetorics class in the Winter 2023. The piece is meant to symbolize the internet in all of its glory. The transition from light colors to darker muddier colors is meant to symbolize the darkness within the inner layers of the internet. The flower shift is to that of a lily of the valley, a beautiful but poisonous flower when ingested, signifying the poisoning that can happen as you delve deeper. The last doll has many symbols of the Slavic pagan goddess Mokosh, or Mara, who is the goddess of winter and death

“LELEKA” INTAGLIO- 03.11.2024

My intaglio class had us etch a copper plate discussing the themes of identity and culture. Leleka was etched in late March, right around the time the storks come back to Ukraine to settle in for spring and summer. The woman is wearing traditional dress, a long white, linen dress with a wool skirt and apron. The scythe, a double meaning, is not meant to signify death, as this is a traditional tool used by people, even still used today. It’s meant to signify my father, as he built one himself as a young man, and mourns its loss here in America. The house in the background is also a traditional house, one my father lived in when he was a boy, and the trees are simply the trees that surrounded his childhood home. The mountains are meant to be the Carpathian Mountains, as I have lineage stemming from there, the “Hutsul” people. The storks on the house are meant to signify rebirth and spring, new life. It is good luck to have a stork build a nest on your house, and you should never disturb it. The piece is meant to signify hope, and a hope of rebuilding and returning home.

“BALANCING ACT” INTAGLIO- 01.29.2024

This was the first project given to us in Intaglio. We were to look at an art piece and take some of the ideas presented there and make them our own. I decided to take the scale and make them into clowns. I found the visuals of clowns to be almost endearing and soft, and I wanted to put them in a space where the focus was just on them, and the balance that they gave one another: in costume, in size, in placement on the page.

"ZAHUBLINIY/SHUKAYU" LITHOGRAPHY- 05.09.2024

This piece is the second in a series of liminal feelings I’ve been wanting to capture. As this is my senior year, I feel very in-between spaces, and the only way I can describe myself or my situation is liminal. To be wandering in a forest is scary, and there is no fully direct translation for zahubliniy- it can be lost, wandering, confused, though I almost prefer searching: searching for a final destination, searching for an exit;  for home. I wanted the focus to be on the space rather than the person. The space in liminality feels more important.

MORRE- 06.03.2024

As this is the last time I will be able to draw on stone, let alone the sizes that are available to me, I decided to draw on a 22x30 in. stone. Because liminality has been so present in my previous works in this class, I decided to finally go to the sea. I have always loved bodies of water, and for me, being in spaces that can wholly encompass me. Morre translates to "sea", which is what I was wanting to depict.
